Essence of Social Media and Social Networking

by Terry Brock on Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Here’s something where I need your help. This is a slide that I’m using in an up-coming presentation. I describe what I feel is the essence, in a nutshell, of Social Media and Social Networking

If you’re wondering how you can implement it or take it to the next level for your work, this could be just what you’re looking for. You’ll get the answer in a very short video.

Watch this video (2:39) and let me know whatcha’ think. I look forward to hearing from you.

Terry . .

Perfect sense. Makes use of what one has, and also uses the tie-ins well. In one set of progressive slides you have hit the mark, and made a great map for one to follow!

Should be a great hit, and thanks for sharing.

Great to hear from you, Pat! Thanx for your kind words. Yes, I thought this quick video would help to put Social Media into perspective. Develop the stuff. Tell people about it. Here’s how to do it — that was the purpose of the video. Thank you for your comments.

You’re right, Melanie! It really isn’t all that complicated. It just takes a strategy. In fact, that is something I talk about on the coaching program. Check it out if you’d like to know more. Thanx for your kind comments. I look forward to having you stop by and visit again. Terry

Terry—just read a book about social media—-this summarized that book and so many articles in a nutshell—LOVE it and plan to send it out to all my colleagues as a short and organized way to understand what they whole thing is about which is providing value and content to people at our sites, through our services (our service e-coach at http://www.e-coachonline.com.
Thanks for this—excellent job!

Hi Terry!
I LOVE this! Sometimes I feel social media is a big complicated tangled web that I have to find time to “keep up” with. This video made it clear that it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Very short, to the point and effective! The point of the three top social networking sites was helpful too. It isn’t necessary to be on all 5,000 that are out there :-)

Best,
Melanie Jatsek

Nice to hear from you, Donna. What are you seeing with social media there in Australia? How is it affecting business? Your insights would be very interesting, if you’d care to share about what you’re experiencing in your work with your clients. All the best, Terry

Terry Brock February 3, 2010 at 4:45 am

Thanx for the comments, Diane. In answer to your question, yes I have some webinars that I do talking about how to make it happen. And yes, I have the “how to” nuts, bolts and wiggle pins of putting together a podcast, YouTube channel and more. Let me know if you’re interested. Terry

Terry Brock February 3, 2010 at 4:43 am

Thank you for the comments, Amanda. You raise some very good points. I’m finding that a more and more executives are embracing tools like Linkedin and Twitter. Much like they didn’t embrace email initially — but later did so voraciously — they are moving to the advantages of using Twitter and other social media tools. And yes, the training is important. I do a lot of that with my coaching programs so that way people get their individual needs met. Let me know what you’re seeing in New Zealand with social media. I’d be interested and I’m sure others would as well. Hope you have a magnificent day! Terry

Your news and items always make me feel more connected.
Your presentation is fine and you asked for feedback
Your audience can see what the others are doing but
if executives are not actively engaged in using social media in their business there may be a learning barrier to actually getting started.
Assume they do not already use any / all the sites you mentioned and do not have a willing teenager on hand to train them.
The executives might like to see the process actually preformed
or/ have an interactive workshop where they add sample files to the different sites and get a real feel of what they personally can do.
Enjoy your lecture!

Terry;

Excellent. This helps people understand the communication outlets available and where to direct that communication b/c getting traffic to the website is all important.

While this is “The Essence of Social Media” – just curious if you do a “spin off” workshop and get into the how of some activities…like how to create an a Pod Cast, how to create your own Youtube channel, video tips, etc.

Great Stuff Terry, a good reminder of how we can leverage of existing information. I know watching and listening, I’ve now created a to do list of an extra 5-6 things I could/Should/must to to my website. Thanks for keeping your finger on the pulse of technology!

Terry Brock February 2, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Thank you, Joni. Yes, there is a lot of information out there. I put this video together to make it simple and upfront, as you said. The key is developing content that people want and need and then presenting it in appealing, fun, educational ways. Nice to hear from you, Joni. Hope you have a great day! Terry

JoniBoike February 2, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Terry, thanks for the way you put things together. I have been inundated with the “how, what and every other way to get my information out there. You put it so upfront and easy to arrange. Steps one, two, three, your done. Thanks Joni

Thank you, Michael. Very kind of you to say that. Yes, that “positioning” you talk about is vitally important. You do that very well yourself. All the best, mate. Terry

Michael Harrison February 2, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Terry this is the best summary I have seen (and I have seen a few). You really have caught the essence of the new world of “positioning” yourself in cyberspace.

Best, Michael
