“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.”
– Amelia Earhart
“Preparation, I have often said, is rightly two-thirds of any venture.” – Amelia Earhart
“Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”
– Amelia Earhart
“The woman who can create her own job is the woman who will win fame and fortune.”
– Amelia Earhart
For some time, I have been interested in the life of Amelia Earhart, the woman who embraced flying back in the 1920’s and 1930’s. She was a true pioneer in that field for both women and men.
The other day, I checked out a couple of books from our local library about Amelia Earhart and read them to learn what challenges she encountered in her day that we can learn from today.
Yes, Amelia Earhart faced different, but similar, challenges to what we have today.
We can learn a lot from her experiences that can help us today.
We can complain about the problems — and yes, they are real.
We can form alliances and protest about it. And yes, we have the right to do that.
But, I’m talking about what is most efficacious.
What is it really working?
This is not that much different from what another one of my heroes said. William James, the father of American Psychology, talked about being pragmatic.
His essay on Pragmatism is a classic!
(I highly recommend it!)
That is a skill we need to continually refine and sharpen to live better.
William James, like Earhardt, who came a little after him, told us we need to learn what we can do to get results.
Today we live in a time that is unprecedented.
I know, I know — many people throughout history have said that.
Yet it is true today as well.
It was true for those who lived during the Gutenberg printing press development, or the industrial revolution, during the revolutionary development of the Internet, and yes, today with AI.
It was true in those times and others.
We can learn from others who faced challenges long ago. Then we apply the First Principles of learning and living to our lives today.
I love studying the life of Amelia Earhart as she lived at a time when it was not thought “proper” to be a woman AND a pilot.
“How audacious is that???!!!”
Well, she blasted through that crud (I’ll use that word here) that existed and helped millions of others.
She didn’t just scream and yell against the system.
She undoubtedly had frustrations from being put down simply because she was a woman in the 1920s who had the audacity to think she could be an airplane pilot.
Instead of just screaming, she studied what to do, how to do it, and then DID it (most important!).
She studied what was happening and learned how to improvise, adapt and overcome.
She took the TME (Time, Money, Energy) and learned an important skill.
She learned to fly those terribly dangerous and fragile tools called airplanes at a time when crashes — and yes, death — were regular occurrences with airplanes.
Yet, in spite of the numerous obstacles, she overcame those challenges and accomplished some amazing feats that we are still talking about today.
Today you and I have a tool called AI. It gives us the ability to do more than ever could’ve been imagined during Amelia Earhardt’s lifetime.
And yet, if she were with us today, I think she would be smiling to realize that people who are put down, ridiculed, and thwarted now have a chance to embrace a tool that can provide enormous freedom.
Yes, by mastering the right tools and skills we can outdistance our detractors!
I think the phrase for that is … Na, na, na, na, na, na!
(Said in my best 2nd grade playground taunting style!)
Don’t openly and aggressively attack your detractors.
Instead, work diligently and persistently behind the scenes to peacefully (key term!) become better and better at learning and mastering important skills.
Make the world better for others.
Doing that makes the world better for yourself.
Solve problems.
Deploy technology and tools that others don’t fully understand.
Use your new-found skills to solve problems and make the world a better place.
I’m raising my delicious morning glass of clear, filtered, room-temperature water to toast Miss Earhart!
Thank you, Miss Earhart, for helping us to see how to overcome put downs.
Now it is up to you and me, my friend, to forge forward.
Acquire the skills of AI.
Learn how to master them to solve seemingly intractable problems.
Peacefully make the word a better place by solving serious problems.
If you resonate with this idea, please share it with others to help them as well. They will thank you for it.
Here’s a video I put together that can help you in figuring out some problem solving skills with AI. It is about leveraging the daylights out of what you do with content creation.
By leveraging the daylights out of your writing, video work, audio work, and more, you are embracing a modern-day way of learning new technology for good.
I’m thinking that Miss Earhart would be smiling and giving us a big thumbs up!
To Your Success,
Terry
