“I like to be specific because it shows more respect.” Kare Anderson
This is a profound statement from my friend, Kare Anderson.
Every time I get the chance to talk with her I find that I learn more and love life more. Recently we were having another Skype video communication and she was giving me a lot of information about some people that she thought would help me. Then she casually mentioned “I like to be specific because it shows more respect.”
That is profound! When you show specificity and care to the details related to someone else, it shows that you have a great deal of respect for them. We’ve heard many times that people say the most important sound to a person is their own name. This underlines the importance of remembering names and using their names correctly when you communicate with people. I think that Kare is on to something even more knowing about specifics. If you can remember specific details about a person concerning their spouse, their children, their work, important events to them, and other details, this stands out from the crowd.
In my work as a professional speaker, I find that there are a lot of details to go into making a presentation “just right.” Most of this is behind the scenes and the audience never knows what has happened (in preparation) or is going on (in the moment) during the presentation. Every business is like this. You have many factors that weigh into making the product or service ideal. Being specific helps to focus your thinking and make you a better businessperson and better at whatever you’re doing.
People often ask me how to raise their Klout Score. In social media your Klout Score is going to be determined largely by the amount of interaction in the activity that you could generate. You will get much more activity on social media when you remember specifics and refer to those specifics that are important to other people.
So here’s your assignment for today: Make it a point to reference something specifically for five people that you encounter today. Think about something that is important to them that is coming up or something that is going on in their life right now or maybe something that was important in the past. It could be something that is a clause that they support.
Yes, you will have to do some thinking about this. You are investing in relationships. Not only to boost your Klout Score, but to build your business and enhance your own personal influence, you want to be specific to help other people. Think specificity. It really does show respect. Thank you, Kare!
