What is the proper role for personal vs. business in social media? That has been the question that has puzzled many serious business owners. Today the lines are not only blurry but down-right confusing.
Recently Gigaom (one of my favorite blogs) ran a story about a couple of media outlets. One is doing it right and the other not doing it right — at least according to the writer. Frankly, I see both sides and am a wee bit confused. Social Media is about revealing who you are. It is about being real. It is about sharing some personal information. http://ow.ly/5v4Wq
However, you can’t go “over the top” as we all know. Some items are best left for only personal information. Some fall into the category of “Too Much Information” and we just don’t want to know about it.
So here’s the question for you today: How do you decide what to share and what to withhold? Is your social media work in Facebook only business? Is Twitter just a broadcast channel for you and a way to spew your message out to others much as if it is a 21st Century version of a 60’s television ad? However, what about the people that share so much personal information that it loses any business value and frankly, we just don’t have time to listen to your personal rantings. Hey, we’re busy and we have business to do!
Let us know your thoughts by posting here. If you’ve got a video you want to share, drop that over and we’ll consider posting it here. If it’s on YouTube send the codes and we can embed it.
This is one that has no clear answer but we all know that the extremes on both sides are wrong. What is the right balance for you? What criteria do you use to make your decision?
I look forward to hearing from you as we all explore this perplexing topic.
