Business-Building Action from Terry Brock
We can learn a lot from history and the lessons that those who went before us learned. Recently I had the opportunity to be once again in my favorite museum in the world, the Rijksmuseum located in Amsterdam in The Netherlands. That is the story today I want to share with you through pictures (you’re gonna’ love ’em!) and through the story that I put together for my column this week in Business Journals.

This week I tell the story of how the great ship builders of the Dutch Empire (circa 1600s-1700’s) built great technologies for their seafaring in that era. I saw a painting in the Rijksmuseum that showed some ships at sea in a raging storm. They were being tossed about to and fro and the younger sailors were terrified. The older sailors, who had seen storms much worse, poked fun at their younger counterparts. The inscription about the boats said:
“The boats were designed for this. Their hulls were minutely adapted for these conditions. The crews have practiced for this kind of weather.”
This is what we have to do today with our businesses. Read the article (about 2 minutes reading time) and you’ll understand more how we can apply the principle they used back then to our lives today.
Enjoy the pictures on my website. I look forward to hearing from you and getting your reaction. Please Retweet and tell the world as we’re working to send a message of hope in our world today. Thank you and I eagerly look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
Terry
