Discipline > Motivation

This morning I was reading from one of my favorite newsletters that I subscribe to and receive on Sunday morning. It is called Farnham Street and I put a graphic of the quote they had today so you can enjoy it.

I think that first sentence really says a lot that you’ve got to learn how to do things when you really don’t feel like doing them at all. I don’t know about you, but I can come up with all kinds of excuses that at least makes sense to me why I shouldn’t do certain tasks.

It’s called rationalization.

It is so easy to come up with reasons or at least excuses why we can’t do something that we know we should be doing. I think it’s inherent within the human condition that laziness and entropy is more natural.

However, the good news is that we can overcome that at anytime we want to.

Yes as simple as it seems discipline is the key.

But the good news is that we can learn discipline and we can be disciplined even when we’re not motivated. Don’t get me wrong. I believe that motivation is critical and I think that we need to find ways that we can motivate ourselves.

The key is we have to do it our self. We cannot wait for someone else to motivate us because really no one can.

You have to discipline yourself. You have to motivate yourself to get something done.

Psychologists tell us that a great motivation comes when we have a desire that we want something accomplished or achieve a worthwhile goal. Keeping that image burned into your brain helps you get through.

Think of it like a student working her way through medical school when she hits those inevitable tough times. Having a strong burning desire to achieve a goal, no matter what, is what it takes for anyone to achieve a goal like that.

Make today your day to be disciplined in at least one area. If you’re having trouble getting something done consider chunking. I found by breaking a task down into chunks makes the attainment of that goal more likely.

What do you think? Leave a note for others so that they can understand what techniques you use to motivate yourself when you really don’t feel like getting something done. What is it that you tell yourself when you need to exercise that discipline?

Thank you for stopping by and I wish you much continued success on your entrepreneurial journey.
