How to Leverage & Learn Technology

Business-Building Action from Terry Brock

It can sometimes be overwhelming. It seems like every week there’s a new technology that we just “gotta’ learn.” It seems that even though they’ve increased the amount of technology we need to know, they haven’t increased the number of hours in the day when we can learn it!

Recently I shared with a person who centers her practice around events and making meetings more productive. Her name is Sylvia Pellegrini. She’s from Italy and now based in London, England. We talked about this important topic on a recent interview.

You and I both know that in today’s world, technology is going to increase in importance more and more. We can use all the old jokes we want and all they tried sayings about how we’re not able to use technology, but that won’t help us. The key is to master those technologies that are most important for YOU in YOUR work. This requires a great deal of focus as well as “cheating” on using technologies that others might not know about.

In this (short) interview I shared several ideas that you can use to master technology and anything else you want to learn. Learning how to learn is one of the greatest skills that you could acquire and enhance to have a competitive advantage in today’s world.

Here’s a few additional tips that you can use to help you to learn more and gain a competitive advantage today.

#1 – Capture educational video clips from YouTube. Get a tool that can help you capture those powerful educational and learning videos that are available all over YouTube on a variety of topics. Think about the possibilities you have today. You can listen to some of the best brainpower in the world that is alive today or has been alive in the past. Much of it is consolidated on YouTube. I use a tool on my Mac called Airy. For about $20 you can capture videos on your Mac computer and then watch them later. There are other tools like this available for Windows as well. You might wonder why this is important because you can watch them on YouTube another time. That’s where technology number two comes in…

#2 – Get a player that will play back in faster time. If you listen to all your content at 1X speed, it is going to be very slow. If you consume the content (audio or video) at 2X speed you will learn twice as fast. The ideal is to be able to adjust the speed based on the rate of speech and the content that you want to absorb. I use a tool on my Mac called VLC player. It is available for both Windows and Mac. It gives you the ability to adjust the playback speed so that you could learn faster and listen to, say, a 60 minute audio in 30 minutes. Think of it like speed reading for audio or video.

There are many other tools available for learning and increasing your retention. What have you found most helpful? I look forward to hearing from you. Please send me a note on Facebook and let me know. You can reach me on Facebook at:
