Coaching is a great tool. It is a powerful way for one person to get the advice, help and assistance from another. I’ve paid money for coaching and I regularly coach others.
But what is the secret ingredient to make it work? Here’s a great post from Inc. magazine, that lays it on the line. To get the best results requires accountability and work. That is tough. It is much easier to think that something will happen “magically.” Well, I hate to break it to you, but “magic” just doesn’t happen on this planet.
The secret of using coaching — or any other application that really works — is to, well, make it work. Yes, there is nothing that takes the place of working, thinking, planning, executing for action and desired results! This is the “secret” which is really no secret.
I think that we, as human beings, just want to find that “magic bullet” that will make everyting easy without any real work on out part. But , that just doesn’t exist on this planet. Notice the picture, above, of Penn Jillette along with me and Gina Carr. Penn, along with his partner, Teller, is one of the greatest magicians on the planet today. They know magic. And yet, they will also be the first to let you know that there is really nothing “magical” about what they do. It is all deception, distraction and a host of other wonderful techniques to make us think something “magical” is happening.
I love Tim Ferriss’ work, The Four Hour Work Week. Yet, the title is deceptively false. I don’t know anyone (including Tim Ferriss) who only works four hours. I love his concept of getting strategies to get results and getting the maximum done in the shortest amount of time. I’ve read his Four Hour Work Week and Four Hour Chef and highly recommend them. However, if you carefully read his books (and they need to be studied and applied, not just read) you’ll see how he works diligently to find what makes a new application come to life.
This is where coaching can shine. In the work I do with clients, we have sufficient time (usually a six-month or one-year period) to get results that the client wants. You have to commit to making it happen. Accountability, as expressed in the Inc. article I cited above, is key to making it happen.
Get the results you want in your life. Find the coach who can help you achieve what you need in record time. Don’t put it off if it is something that you need. Be willing to invest the TME (Time, Money, Effort) to get the results you need. You will be glad you did it.
Oh, and just to be fair, here is a picture of Teller with Gina and me also! Both of these guys are geniuses. I’ve had the chance to talk with them (and yes, Teller does talk, just not on stage in their act— although we did hear him screech in the most recent edition of Penn & Teller’s on-stage performance). This is held at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (a must-see show!). And no, they are not compensating me to brag about them — just treat yourself and see them the next time you get to Vegas!
Get the coaching you need. Work diligently — and yes, hard! —- to get the right coach for you, in the right area, at the right time. Let us know how coaching has helped you.
