Business-Building Action from Terry Brock
Dateline: Melbourne, Australia I’m visiting in Sydney, Melbourne and other parts of Australia now. I love this country. The scenery is fabulous. The weather — particularly this time of year — is delicious (it is late Spring, early Summer here as I type this). The best part of all is that the people are open, tolerant and fun-loving!
This past weekend I had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the life of a great friend (they’d say mate, here in Australia) who is turning 70. Winston Marsh is a man who has helped many to learn about life and business. He is a man you want to follow. As we celebrated his 70th birthday, it was good to see a good man recognized for all he has done.
Winston has been ready for opportunities throughout his life. He worked hard in many fields before becoming a world-class speaker. He is a Certified Speaking Professional from the National Speakers Association in Australia. He was one of the Founders of that organization and still serves it well 20+ years later.
Winston has helped many people as the businessman and professional speaker who he is. Throughout his career he has been prepared for opportunities when they come about. He regularly teaches people to “Make ’em say WOW!” in marketing. He is one of the best marketers I’ve met — and I have met many. He is a man who continually is studying and learning about what works and how to do it. Part of that is being prepared for whatever happens.
I’ve learned from this marketing guru and even applied some of his lessons this past weekend. As I was attending his 70th birthday party at a resort in the country outside Melbourne, I had a sudden visit by two delightfully jovial kangaroos. They bounced (literally) onto the path where I was walking and soon left. Fortunately for me — and for you as you see the above picture — I was ready with my iPhone to get a picture. They were quickly gone within a matter of seconds.
Life and business are like that. Opportunities often appear unannounced and then they are gone. If you are not ready, you miss out — sometimes forever. The preparation comes before and it is seldom paid for. However, when the time arrives, if you are ready, you get the reward.
Losers call this “luck.” I believe in the old saying that”Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. You have to be ready.
So, what are you doing to prepare? What specific steps are you taking to be ready when that rare opportunity comes along for you? Please leave your comments on my website at www.TerryBrock.com I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you, Winston, for all the great lessons you have taught us. I think your first 70 years just means you’re off to a “good start!” Most of all, that you for being my friend and a great mate!
