“It Ain’t whatcha’ done that counts; it’s whatcha’ done lately that counts”

Business-Building Action From Terry Brock

Wisdom can come even from grammatically incorrect aphorisms. I think of the above statement as one that applies. I don’t know the source of this, but the idea of the title of this post is allegedly from an old football coach (we don’t know who that old football coach was).

Concept of skillThis concept was echoed in a song by Janet Jackson back in 1986 entitled, “What have you done for me lately?” about a woman frustrated with her partner in a relationship. Well, what applies in relationships applies here as well.

We live in a world that is changing at record pace. One of the worst things that can happen to someone is to be successful. That might sound strange coming from this relationship marketing speaker who talks about building relationships to audiences around the world. However, having a past success– – – and resting because of that –––is a major cause of problems.

I know in my life sone of the greatest challenges come after success. Hey, I worked hard to achieve. But there’s a’s challenge built into that success.

Yes, it is good to enjoy success. Yes, our body and spirits need time for rest and relaxation. This is particularly true after a lot of hard work. But the problem comes when we step back and think that now we’ve got it made. One of the worst things that you can ever say is that deceptive, laziness-inviting phrase:

“Now, I’ve got it made.”

Don’t let the danger of success stop you. It is important to continually create compelling communication, Remember those four C’s of success in today’s hot online world. You must continually create compelling communication in order to stay alive. The good news is that by staying fresh you’ll keep your mind active.

Think of it like having a great meal at a restaurant last month. The food was perfect. The service was excellent. The pricing was just right. Even the weather was great. All of that is good and it makes for wonderful memories —-and great pictures on Facebook! 🙂

But just because you had a good meal last month doesn’t mean you’re finished. The process of life is ongoing rejuvenation and new life-infusing enrichment. Continue to refresh and continue to stay current on new trends, new ideas, and new thinking. Be anchored in principles that have worked for the past millennia and will never change. Some of these include kindness to others, learning market-valuable skills, being healthy, and many others.

It is too easy to rest after a past success so make it your policy to work hard, celebrate and enjoy your successes for a limited time, and then begin again scrambling like you had lost and must overcome a failure.

Keep reinventing your message and yourself. Yes, it is nice that you did something great, to rephrase that old football coach’s adage above. However, it is even more important to have done something lately that is amazing. Continue to keep doing amazing! Make amazing an on-going part of your life and your work.
