There are many beliefs that can hold you back from the success that you can enjoy.
Many often like to think it is something with other people. They believe that someone else is holding them back or putting them down.
Others might believe that it is because they belong to a particular race, or religion, or country, or [fill in the blank with your own belief].
Actually, even though these can play a role, they are not the biggest impediment holding you back.
I love this quote from Sven Goran Eriksson, a Swedish football (we’d say soccer in the US) manager and former player.
“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.”
It is the fear that you won’t be able to do something that holds you back more than anything.
When you fear something it can be paralyzing. It stops you from moving forward. Even worse, it can stop you from being creative to come up with options to achieve what you want.
It was US President Franklin D. Roosevelt who said that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. This was spoken in his inaugural address in March of 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression.
You can overcome fear by replacing it with competence and confidence. The competence comes first. Then as you realize that you can handle the tough calls because you have done your homework, you have practiced, you have corrected failures and learned from them, you will gain more confidence.
As you gain more confidence, you melt away the fear. You realize that fear is only a small tool that we have as human beings to protect us in many cases. Eons ago, you would be fearful of a sudden noise in the grass nearby. Hey, that could be a saber-tooth tiger and being alert and running could save your life. It could also just be the wind. Either way you needed to pay attention.
Today we don’t face the same kind of fears that our ancestors did. However, that fear is still there and can harm us.
Replace fear with competence and knowledge. Study. Do the hard work. Gain the skills needed to succeed.
This is how you get ahead. This is how you achieve.
Let that fear which can be your greatest barrier instead spur you on to do what gives you power to succeed in each situation.
