Business-Building Ideas from Terry Brock
Organizing and running your business is paramount for being productive. In today’s fast-paced and changing-every-minute world, many successful leaders I speak with confide that they feel further and further behind even as they work faster.
It is time for a reboot.
Instead of just trying to work faster and harder try the “working smarter” ninja trick of leveraging. Instead of you doing it all yourself, you set systems (key term) in place so that you can get a lot more done, even if you worked 36 hours in a day (Admit it, you do sometimes wish you could do that, don’t you?)! Wise preparation leads to success. It doesn’t happen by accident or so-called “luck.” You have to be willing to pay the price. Time. Money. Energy. All three must be invested to gain success. Diligent preparation leads to better execution.
Here are three quick steps that can help you to get more done, be more “WOW!” productive and boost that bottom line.
1. Do Only Those Things You Can Do — Outsource The Rest. I wish I would have come up with that but Peter Drucker beat me to the punch many years ago! Yes, you can save a little bit of money by doing some tedious tasks. However, you the problem is the unseen consequences of loss. What if you had been on the phone to that prospect who likely would buy from you? What about that post you didn’t write that could have generated business? Do what only you can do and make it your goal to get others to do the rest. This means bringing in people in your community who can easily do tedious errands for you. Get someone else to do the cleaning.
2. Be Smart When You Outsource. Not everyone will be the best fit for you. One of the best sources you can use is on-line contractor websites like e-Lance, fiverr and oDesk or others. Here you find qualified, reasonably-priced people to help get work done for you. A smart way to do this is by testing. Start with a low price assignment and see for yourself how dependable (or not) the person is. Gradually increase the price and scope of other projects. When you find someone good, pay them well and take care of them. Your business depends on it.
3. Automate As Much As Possible. The ultimate outsourcing is automation. Instead of relying on a person, who is fallible, can get sick, can leave you and not be available for a host of reasons, find ways to let automation do what you need. This is the smart way our ancestors achieved greatness. Oxen replaced a human tiling the fields. Tractors replaced animals tilling the fields. Better tractors replaced the original tractors to get more yield per acre. This is the successful trend in history. Think of ways you can get machines and systems to do the work for you. Yes, this requires a lot of thinking, but it will yield far greater returns for you in the future.
By leveraging the resources available to get work done today, you’ll free yourself to focus on becoming better at your best skills. Always think about how you can automate to get more done with machines and systems. Make this your goal to continually improve and enhance how you do it.
Somehow, I think I see Peter Drucker, off in the distance, giving us the “thumbs-up” signal!
