That’s Enough! Time To Turn This Stinkin’ Economy Around!

Business-Building Action From Terry L. Brock

“I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna’ take it anymore.”  From the 70’s movie “Network” and character Howard Beale.

“It’s time somebody punched this economy in the nose“ Southwest Airlines placard seen at several airports

We are living in times like no other.  As I travel and speak at many different conferences around the world, I see more and more fear turning to frustration and even anger over the current situation and economy.  It is understandable when we see what is happening.

However, as entrepreneurs, we don’t have to get angry or even frustrated.  We don’t even have to get even.  We get to succeed in achieving our own goals.  As they say, “Success is the best revenge.”

Lots of industries are changing.  I read on my iPad this morning that magazine readership has declined by 16% among the affluent.  Ad Age went on to say that the affluent are consuming information 12% more on the Internet.  Yes, the affluent (those earning more than $100,000 per year) are spendingless time reading news from paper.  However, they are spending a lot more time reading news on the Internet, watching videos on the Net and listening to audio on the Net.  Do you see a pattern here?

We can bemoan the decline of people reading physical paper (not really a bad thing, after all!) or we can find out where they are getting information (largely from the Net and now other sources related to that) and position ourselves accordingly.

It is time to change our way of thinking and doing business and adapt to a world that is different than ever before.  It is not good or bad — it just is.

We have to think differently.  Here’s a poll I saw recently on Linkedin:

Rather than trying to convince people that your product is worth more, using a question like “If you see an opportunity, would you like to be ready?  Are you willing to be flexible with spending limits to achieve that opportunity?”  Posed that way, most reasonable people would answer yes.

Asking the Right Questions is ParamountNow is your time. Yes, things are different.  Yes, you have to adapt.  And yes, there are plenty of opportunities that didn’t exist before.  However, YOU have to change and adapt.

Think in terms of getting your message out through apps (applications) on portable devices like the iPhone, the iPad, Smartphones and others.  Think about enhancing your business presence on Facebook, Twitter (see their new interface!), LInkedin and other social media sites.  Embrace and use video to reach prospects where they are.

You have a choice.  You can sit around and complain about what is happening (lots of luck on getting results with that strategy!).  Or, you can take matters into your own hands.  Government won’t (and really can’t) help you.  Big Business never had an obligation to help you.  No one has an obligation to help you.  You have to reach out and do it on your own.

Best way to make it on your own?  Here’s the beautiful irony of human nature.  You achieve the results you want and get what you want when you help others get what they want.  The most successful salespeople are not the pushy people who turn others off.  The most successful in any area are those who go out of their way to assist and help others.

Don’t blame the politicians (although that is easy to do and a strong case can be made for lots of negatives about them!).  Instead, slap yourself across the face, realize it is a new world today and take the right steps to help others.

Then you won’t be “as mad as hell” and won’t have to take it anymore!
