I’m thinking about you, dear Business Journal reader, as I sit here in my hotel room in Perth, Australia. This naturally beautiful community is nestled gently against the Indian Ocean and the thriving capital of western Australia. I’m thinking about you because of what their economy is going through and how you can benefit in your business when it comes to disruption.
Recently I talked with author Whitney Johnson about disrupting yourself.
She has worked with the well-known Harvard business professor Clayton Christensen, who is legendary in the field of disruption and innovation. While I’m here in Perth talking with business leaders, I have learned about the disruption their economy is going through over the past few years. We can learn a lot from what is happening here in Australia.
A couple of years ago, the Australian economy was thriving because of mining here in Western Australia. The Chinese were buying a lot of iron ore and uranium. Other minerals were being mined and millions of dollars were being made by enterprising entrepreneurs.
Today that has changed. With the falling price of commodities, the mining sectors have had to adjust to disruption in the economy. What worked before does not work now.
